A Psalm of Lament and Thanksgiving

I love the Psalms because they are both prayers and songs. As I’ve been reading one each morning during my prayer time, I find that a Psalm of my own – a Psalm of both lamentation and praise – is forming in my mind. So I thought I’d write it down and post it here for Thankful Thursday.

A Psalm of Lament and Thanksgiving

Oh Lord, my God, how long
will You stand by as cancer
strikes those I love,
as pain and sadness
are all around me

How long must we endure
this broken world
sometimes wondering
where You are,
where is Your promised refuge

Tears fall upon my pillow
as I long for salvation,
for healing and no pain
in the lives of my loved ones
my friends, my family
Your children

Still I praise You, Oh Lord
I trust in Your promises
clinging to faith and hope
found only in You
I lift to Your throne
Your children in need

Your faithfulness endures
beyond what I can see
with eyes blinded by pain
Still I know, I believe
Your grace and mercy
are more than this world needs

May Your name be exalted
Your grace be embraced
Your love be never-ending
Your peace from me radiate
So that those in need
will know You and praise You
forever and ever

Little Things – A Poem

I decided this morning that it was time to get back to the heart of Thankful Thursday and write a poem about the little things I am thankful for.

Little Things

I’m thankful for
the little things
I often take for granted

A soft warm bed
to sleep safely at night

The smell of coffee brewing
as I open my eyes each morn

A long hot shower
to start each new day

Music of all varieties
to suit my every mood

Granola and nuts with almond milk
to energize me on my way

Flowers blooming spring to fall
offering beauty to my eyes

Family and friends who help
bear the burdens of life

Access to the Word of God
in multiple translations

A means through prayer
to speak with my sweet Jesus

Freedom to enjoy the life
God has blessed me with

I know that freedom
is not a little thing
but makes these little things
and infinitely more
ever oh so sweet

Vows of Love – A Poem

Today is my husband’s and my 26th wedding anniversary, and since it is also Thankful Thursday I thought it would be nice to write a little poem for the occasion. It’s been a busy day and so I’m getting a bit of a late start on writing it, but I’ve been pondering what to write off and on all day. Here is what I came up with.

Vows of Love

For better or for worse
In sickness and in health
The vows we shared
Vows revealing our love

Some days are better
Some days are worse
Sickness and health
we have seen together

We cling to our vows
To our life joined in God
No matter what life brings
Our love will never die

The Grace of Jesus – A Triolet

I missed posting something last week for Thankful Thursday, and couldn’t bear the thought of missing it again and letting those who read my blog think I’d lost my thankfulness. I most certainly have not! Our God has blessed me with so much to be thankful for; and I know that when I focus on my blessings and His grace my outlook on each new day is so much better.

In addition to the grace of Jesus, which I have written a poem about for today, I am also thankful for the triolet form of poetry. Because of the repetition, you get 8 lines for the price of writing 5. It’s a wonderful gift for the writer struggling with writer’s block.

Update: It just now dawned on me that it is not Thursday and that I posted this a day early. Then I realized I was still in time for Open Link Night at dVerse Poets Pub. That is truly the kind of week I’m having, but I’m thankful nonetheless.

The Grace of Jesus

The grace of Jesus my Savior
Flows from His blood on the cross
Bringing me peace and redemption
The grace of my Jesus, my Lord

The source of the world’s salvation
The answer to each petition
The grace of Jesus my Savior
Flows from His blood on the cross

My Faithful Savior – A Triolet

Many things in this life are uncertain, causing even the faithful to struggle and doubt. Even at such times, or maybe even more so then, I am thankful that God has promised that He will never leave me or forsake me.

I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul:

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV).

For Thankful Thursday today I have written another triolet, this one about the faithfulness of my Savior and my God, Jesus Christ.

My Faithful Savior

My faithful Savior will always be near
In my struggles and pain, when I doubt
that anything will ever change
My faithful Savior will always be near

I know someday He will exchange
the tears I cry for a glorious crown
My faithful Savior will always be near
In my struggles and pain, when I doubt

Enough – A Poem

I like to believe that no matter what happens in this life, Jesus would be enough for me. But having never had that idea truly tested I can’t be sure. But I am thankful that God loves me even when I am not sure because He knows my desire. I am reminded of the father who asked Jesus to heal his son who was possessed by an evil spirit, if Jesus could.

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
Mark 9:23-24 (NIV).

Yesterday as I pondered my desire for Jesus to be enough and my need for Him to help me overcome my uncertainty, this poem was inspired.

7/17/12 Update: I have linked this poem for dVerse Poets Pub‘s 1st Open Link Night of its second year! Happy Anniversary to dVerse!

Would You be
Enough for me
If You were all I had?

“You are my all in all”
I’ve declared
Many times before

But if all else
Walked out the door
Would I cry for more?

Would I lament
My family lost
My friends who’d gone away?

Would I wail
For vanished possessions
The things I’ve come to love?

Or would I rest
In You alone
Content You stayed with me?

Is Your grace
Your everlasting love
Truly enough for me?

Today, my Lord
I pray You’d be
Forever enough for me

Beloved – A Poem

It seems my Thankful Thursday theme has come a long way from its humble beginnings on January 6, 2011 with an acrostic poem titled Thankful. With few exceptions, though, the one constant is that Thankful Thursday means a poem about something I am thankful for.

The other day one of my fellow bloggers wrote about our new name in Christ, and asked her readers what we believed our new name was. My first thought was “beloved.” As I pondered a poem to write for today, I decided that would be my theme.

I long to be
Your beloved child
Your cherished friend
Your everything

You long to be
My beloved God
My cherished friend
My everything

It’s not a wish come true
But a prayer answered
That brought us together
As beloved

My beloved is mine and I am his;
he browses among the lilies.
Song of Songs 2:16 (NIV).

Thankful For – A Poem

Thankful for the Lamb of God
the spotless Lamb
who gave His life
for mine

Thankful for the Spirit of God
the Holy Spirit
who is new life
in me

Thankful for our Father God
our Heavenly Father
the author of life

Thankful for the Word of God
the truthful Word
that promises life
to me

Thankful for my faith in God
the gift of faith
that holds onto His life
in mine

Thankful for the grace of God
His amazing grace
that saved my life
set free

Thankful for God’s Love

It’s Thankful Thursday and I’ve been so busy this week I didn’t get a chance to write a poem for today. Which doesn’t mean I’m not thankful, even for the things that have been keeping me busy.

One thing I am Thankful for is the love of God and the music that reminds me of His love. Earlier this week I created a YouTube video of the song Better than Life by Trevor Morgan, so I decided just to share that video for today. I am including the link here for those who want to go to YouTube and watch it because apparently embedding it into this post will cause WGM to block it anyway.

So here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rb_v8XSQC_Q&feature=channel&list=UL

Never forget that God loves you, and that His love is better than life and better than all the things surrounding you today.

Third Day – A Poem

With the Third Day concert coming up this Sunday, of course I had to write a poem for Thankful Thursday about how thankful I am for their wonderful music. Every song Third Day sings is for the glory of God and provides encouragement to the believer. That’s something to be thankful for.

Third Day
The Spirit of God
Heard in each song
Inspired lyrics encouraging me
Rock music that I love, brings joy
Declaring the love of God for all

Divine grace and mercy
t the core of all they sing
ea, for their praise of sweet Jesus

When I think of the joy I find in Christian music, I’m reminded of the Psalms, many of which were written to be sung to the Lord. I believe the Lord is pleased when we sing and shout for joy to His glory.

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
make music to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,
with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—
shout for joy before the LORD, the King.
Psalm 98:4-6 (NIV).
